Description

The project addresses the difficulties of early inclusion and integration of children with special educational needs in kindergartens. The project aims at introducing an efficient model of supportive learning environment for such children in 3 kindergartens in the city of Varna. First, a 2-day round table will be held with the stakeholders (26 kindergartens, institutions, NGOs, parents) to raise awareness about inclusive education. Second, 3 kindergartens will be selected for resource support of such children and 15 teachers will be trained. Third, the needs assessment of the children will be carried out and 30 individual development plans will be drafted. Next, experts from Karin Dom Foundation will work together with the children and teachers to support and share experience. Finally, the results will be presented at a conference for about 250 participants. The project will benefit the involved 30 children with special needs, their families, teachers and the community in general.

Summary of project results

The project activities helped provide additional services to support the creation of a supportive environment for the development and adaptation of children with special needs in kindergartens. The project raised the knowledge and skills of teachers and resource teachers to interact more efficiently with children with special educational needs. The support from the specialists from Karin Dom provided on the spot in the kindergartens boosted the confidence of teachers to apply in practice the methods and improved the children’s development. The information activities helped change the attitudes towards acceptance, active dialogue and raised motivation to work with children with special needs. One of the most important and sustainable project results was the dynamic exchange and cooperation between all the stakeholders during which the competences of the parties developed to understand the children’s needs and create a supportive environment for children with special educational needs in kindergartens. Teachers from 11 kindergartens in the city of Varna were trained under the project and thematic meetings were held between the teachers and representatives of NGOs and the institutions. A didactic guide called Guide to Support teachers in Kindergartens and a compilation of good practices were prepared. The project activities involved 372 children from kindergartens out of whom 164 children with special needs, 407 teachers, parents, staff and decision-makers.
