Description

The purpose of the Project is to safeguard water catchment forests from high fire risk, with the overall objective of preserving water catchment forests and natural habitats of the Ebro river basin. Reference is made to the application dated 24 April 2007 and additional information provided by the Focal Point on 24 May 2007, 17 and 26 July 2007. The completed Project shall include the following activities and results: - rehabilitation and improvement of forest tracks; - establishment of thinning strips alongside forest tracks; - establishment of new firebreaks; - maintaining existing firebreaks; - silvicultural treatment in an area of 1,105 hectares in order to reduce the risk of fires; - construction of a new water point in Jaca, Huesca to secure supply of water in case of a forest fire; - a publicity campaign aiming at increased public awareness on forest fire prevention and how to act in case of a fire. The Project Promoter is the Ebro Water Authorities under the Spanish Ministry of Environment. The Focal Point shall ensure that the Project Promoter provides at least 49.9 percent of the estimated eligible project costs.
