Description

The main objective is to promote reading performance as a new method for playing in Romania. The concept of reading performance, a new concept that combines theater reading performances in unconventional places and interaction with the audience is a branch underdeveloped theater in Romania and therefore first need identified is to promote and make known characteristics and this typical reading performance. Secondly the identified need is to bring theatre closer to potential viewers. Many people do not know if they like theatre, simply because they have never seen a professional theatre performance before. Therefore through the proposed reader’s theatre, this category will come into contact with this dramatic art and would fall in love with it. The project consists of a 3 day reading performance festival in Timisoara, in places like art galleries, coffee shops etc. The idea of this show comes from the awareness of the public's low interest in theatre. The five actors and four directors involved in the project are members of the Theatre for You Association or collaborators. They will select and translate texts by contemporary playwrights – Maria Goos, Dea Loher, JM Vieira Mendes etc. which will be used in the shows. Some authors will be invited during the festival to interact with the public and to be able to talk about their work and about the desired impact on the audience. The festival will end with an event where the Romanian cultural stakeholders will be invited. Persons in markets, cafes, art galleries, university hall, shopping malls, especially young people from Timisoara, Romania will be the main beneficiary of the shows and know the reading performance as a new way to perform theater.

Summary of project results

The Reading Performance Festival Project is a new concept of interaction with the audience, of theatre-reading performed in unconventional places (multinational offices, houses, cafés /tea shops) addressed to an audience that directly involves the viewer in an unusual way to play theatre. The project has met the need to include reading in young people's lives by promoting and selecting a series of texts able to spark interest in current social issues and inter cultural debates. In the context of increasing cultural dialogue, an objective was to promote contemporary play theatre texts with different approaches and themes, written through the lens of different cultures, knowledge of contemporary play writers from other cultures with various artistic massages, promotion of reading performances in other languages that talks about different mentalities and, not least, rejuvenating the theatre by involving young people, from the director and actors to the technical staff. The projects results materialized in attending the Festival of two foreign authors/ play-writers (Gerard Watkins and Zelijco Hubac) of total forecast of 3 authors, 8-reading performances of total forecast of 7 shows, 19 play actors involved of total forecast of 5 actors and 4 directors, 11 new members joined the association of total forecast of 10 young people, 5 media appearances in Timisoara and national coverage of total forecast of 2 minimum, 3 young people from minority theatre involved in the Festival of total forecast of minimum 2 young artists / actors. Outputs have resulted in the thorough pre-selection of the 12-play theatre texts from a total of 30 texts considered and analyzed and the final selection of 8 texts, one more than indicated in the financial application, on the principle that in the reading performance quality of writing is fundamental, followed by getting information about texts and authors with the opportunity to come into contact with the authors. Another output delivered, was the Festival program agenda, the reading performances timing and actors distribution, as well as the choice of atypical places and locations, from office buildings to cultural centre and cafés. The main benefit was the bond created between an unknowing audience from different socio-professional categories and the manifestations of contemporary theatre by attracting them to the theatre and to reading and by promoting a new genre of theatre performed in atypical environments and places.
