Biomass composting mechanism for preserving biodiversity in Natura 2000 areas
Summary of project results
Natural meadows, grasslands, and wetlands are natural assets. They have survived the greatest biodiversity, many rare species. If there are no open spaces left, the landscape will uniform, and the habitats of medicinal, melliferous and other plants and animals living in them will disappear. Unused meadows, grasslands, wetlands gradually turn into forests because they are in the forest area. In order to solve this problem a project „Biomass composting mechanism for preserving biodiversity in Natura 2000 areas“ was implemented. During the project implementation period (February 2015 – April 2017) main project objectives were achieved: a long-term mechanism for composting in Telšiai State Forest Enterprise was created; the open habitat biodiversity in Natura 2000 areas in one lithuanian region - Samogitia (Žemaitija) were preserved and the local community was involved in the conservation of biodiversity and biodegradable waste composting. The composting site was equipped with the necessary equipment (1 tumbler, 1 shredder, 1 articulated loader and 1 telescopic loader, 1 scoop were purchased). The machinery for open habitat management was purchased with 2 tractors, 3 haymakers, 2 trailers, 2 rakes, 1 baling equipment and 5 trimmers. Unnecessary shrubs and trees as well as grass vegetation in the neglected meadows and open habitats were cut and mowed down in the area of 302 ha. The collected biomass was used for production of firewood the moved biomas in Natura 2000 was taken to the nursery. Benefits of the project implementation: the open habitat spaces were restored, landscape was revitalized old trees were freed, rare plants, fungi and animal species, valuable trees, medicinal and melliferous plant plantations, endangered habitats and species were preserved.
