Description

The Czech Republic and Norway have experienced a serious decline in young people’s interest in studying, on both secondary and tertiary level of education. Despite optimistic predictions, changes in teaching strategies may not directly increase student engagement. It is therefore necessary to understand barriers to learning, problems of school motivation, learning environment and factors that can facilitate improvement. Presented project will establish cooperation between the Faculty of Education of University of South Bohemia and the Department of Education of Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Both institutions are very interested in studying and dealing with this phenomenon. The expected results of this cooperation will include exchange of professional and scientific knowledge, sharing data from current research projects, modifying curricula of courses focused on school motivation and learning environment, and finding common ground for follow-up joint research project.

Summary of project results

The overall objective of the project was to describe, analyse and share the Norwegian experience of working with school motivation and improving school environment. Moreover, the aim was to identify successful teacher training practices with a potential of being effectively applied to the Czech context. The project established a cooperation between the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology, Faculty of Education, University of South Bohemia and the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning, Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Both objectives have been reached during 2-months research stay. There have been more than 30 single meetings with professionals, academicians, students/pupils and more than 10 separate classroom observations. During the research we obtained unique research data (both quantitative and qualitative one) and started extensive cooperation with Norwegian academic professionals and teachers.
