Description

The project provides for increasing the level of competence of Bulgarian academic staff members at the Medical University of Plovdiv in cooperation with CBNRM Networking, Norway and Roma 1995 Regional Development Foundation for the purpose of educational support of citizens from ethnic minorities including Roma. The project is in priority field of medical sciences including various specialties with a particular focus on health of citizens with Roma origin by means of education and research. The project activities include exchange of experience and adoption of Norwegian good practices, organization of 6 educational and information seminars for academic staff members from the project promoter and ethnic minority groups including Roma. The Roma target group consists of 50 citizens from the regions of Plovdiv, Kyustendil, and Stara Zagora, selected by pre-agreed criteria (less literate potential young parents, parents and families) between the project promoter and the partners. The academic staff target group consists of professionals in Pediatric Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Family Planning and Obstetrics Care, and Occupational Health.The project aims to achieve better awareness among the target groups concerning the prevention and treatment of congenital anomalies in children from minority groups including Roma, improving the access to modern and adequate medical care, raising awareness of the Roma target group in prevention and treatment of diseases they have. 22 lecturers (9 Bulgarian and 4 Norwegian) will participate in the seminars. The partnership will achieve lasting inter-institutional cooperation and will seek for sustainable continuation of the project measures to overcome the social exclusion of vulnerable ethnic groups including Roma.

Summary of project results

All project indicators were met, as follows: 7 joint programmes for training secondary tutors developed, 6 joint programmes for training Roma population (the Roma target group) developed, 22 secondary tutors (staff members of the Medical University of Plovdiv) trained by Norwegian trainers from the donor project partner aimed to capacity building in training the Roma target group (7 training seminars held); 300 members of the Roma community in 3 regions (Stolipinovo, Kyustendil and Stara Zagora) trained on 6 training seminars in total, 50 out of 300 participants successfully passed the training; 2 special joint publications developed and issued (“Methodology for health education of Roma in BG” and “Guide for experts in training and education of Roma in health problems and medical issues”). 500 information leaflets printed. Awareness raising activities implemented. 4 media publications (2 in BG and 2 in NO). The project promoter was recognized as a leading university in the field.
