Description

In the Romanian Municipality of Marasesti, Roma children and youth from the Cartier-Nou community are living in rough conditions. The lack of access to jobs have forced many Roma parents to use their children in the day to day labour. The main objective of the project is to ensure the improvement of the situation of Roma children and young people at risk through upgrading an existing day center. The modernization and building work will include replacing windows, insulation, interior renovation, purchasing of computers, furniture, sewing machines etc. The project will involve the community in improving the situation of children and young people at risk, will provide an appropriate response to social exclusion and contribute to reducing economic and social disparities through information campaigns, counseling services for children and their families. It is expected that 60 children and 60 parents will benefit from the activities of the project.

Summary of project results

The project targeted Roma children and youths from Cartier Nou area, belonging to Mărășești city and it aimed to improve their situation by providing social services and by involving along the community in this process in order to achieve successful results. Through the project, the promoter rehabilitate the center where the project activities were developed and also built a new playground nearby in order to provide a safe environment for children. The school dropout risk was addressed by developing a remedial educational program at which 40 children at risk attended. 60 children, 40 youths and 76 parents participated to counseling sessions in order to increase the awareness degree regarding the importance of education. For increasing the abilities and competencies of youths, 20 of them graduated an IT course and 16 graduated cleaning agent course and all of them attended vocational counselling sessions. The project promoter organized and involved the all beneficiaries and the community in organizing sport competitions for children and youths and trips.
