Summary of project results

Disability strongly correlates with poverty, social exclusion, personal and professional success and low tolerance of diversity in Romania. In EU, 1/6 of the population has a disability; in Romania, North-East region registers the second highest number of people with disabilities. The project was carried out in Iasi, Vaslui and Neamt counties, developing innovative services for people with disabilities, caregivers and professionals from public and private entities. 12 institutional partnerships have been created to facilitate the implementation of the activities and beneficiaries’ involvement. In order to increase social inclusion of people with neuro-psychomotor disabilities and their families, the following activities were undertaken: 9 training sessions developing independent life skills and personal development for 53 children and youth with disabilities; 20 seminars for 317 caregivers, on how to take care of persons with disabilities; art therapy sessions for 30 children and young persons with neuro-psycho-motor disabilities and counselling services for 20 parents. The partner’s mobile team provided home services to 64 persons with physical disabilities (evaluation of mobility and recovery needs, information and training on how to use mobility equipment). 91 specialists (from public and private sectors) working with persons with disabilities increased their knowledge and skills by attending 3 trainings on legislation in the field of disability and methods for working with persons with disabilities. 15 articles on medical, psychological, legal and educational topics regarding disability were posted on project promoter’s blog. Direct services and capacity building initiatives were complemented with an awareness and sensitization campaign aimed at increasing community awareness and tolerance towards disabled people. Three special events were organised, attended by over 100 people with disabilities and 250 community members. The promoter and its partner also increased their organizational capacity: 10 specialists completed three trainings (Personal Development Counsellor; Worker through Combined Arts, Recovery Teacher).
