Description

The "SALUT/HELLO – Home is Where We Live" project, implemented by ICAR Foundation and The Romanian Peasant Museum, aims to promote democratic values and contribute to a tolerant Romanian society, open to the integration of migrants. Through educational activities and cultural events (film projections, workshops of traditional crafts, multicultural fair) and outreach activities of journalists (information campaigns, press contest), the project will increase the visibility of migrants, will improve their image among the general public, and will increase media interest to the topic of asylum and migration.

Summary of project results

Although, according to the Integration of immigrants Barometer from 2014, the image of foreigners was predominantly favourable in Romania and has improved gradually since Romania joined the EU, Romanians are not willing to participate in the integration of immigrants into society, considering that it is the duty of the foreigner to make all necessary efforts in this direction, although the integration process cannot be achieved without the engagement of the host community. Therefore, a campaign to bring together the two communities (the host community and the migrant one) was needed, so that each of them could better understand the issues and the challenges of the other. "HELLO - Home is where we live" project aimed at developing a tolerant and inclusive society, at promoting the respect for the rights of refugees and immigrants in Romania and fostering democratic values. The proposed activities stimulated the interest of the press and of the general public for these minority groups of Romanian society, highlighting the cultural richness brought by foreigners living in Romania. Promoting social inclusion of migrants and understanding of multiculturalism was achieved through workshops of traditional crafts held by migrant trainers, attended by 78 participants, and through a multicultural fair with 7 migrant exhibitors, with more than 500 visitors. Raising awareness among the general public and journalists on the issue of migration was carried out through information campaigns. A contest for journalists on the themes of tolerance and integration of immigrants was organised; 20 participants with a total of 27 journalistic materials took part in this contest. The public awareness component has been tackled through screenings of art and documentary movies; over 600 spectators attended the events. The main expected result of the project implemented by ICAR Foundation in partnership with the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant was to promote diversity and the rights of migrants; the project in its entirety is a campaign of information and awareness about the integration of immigrants and minority groups in the Romanian society by encouraging mutual knowledge in the context of multicultural activities.
