Summary of project results

The Project “Empowerment”, implemented by Roma Cultural Centre O Del Amenca, addressed problems which the poor interethnic communities are confronting, such as the lack of active citizenship and the lack of social solidarity. The objectives of the project aimed to: increase the social and public participation of the citizens from Jilava (Ilfov County); develop abilities, competences and self-esteem for 10 persons from Jilava in the field of entrepreneurship, strategic planning and project management (including project proposals writing); promote intercultural dialogue by organizing community civic actions. The target group of the project consisted of 55 persons (Roma and Romanians) from Jilava commune (15 adults, 20 youth, 20 children), persons that were empowered to become responsible regarding the development of their community. 15 people constantly attended monthly meetings and managed to create a Local Action Group. At these meetings the needs from the Local Action Plan were analysed and the civic actions were planned accordingly. 3 civic actions were organized, therefore the interest and the self-esteem of the community members in solving problems specific to their community, increased. Also, a series of meetings between community members and representatives of authorities were organised. These events were part of an advocacy campaign directed at adopting the principles of good governance among public authorities. At the same time, 8 workshops were organised for the members of the community, on developing strategic planning skills and project management. 6 counselling sessions were offered to disadvantaged persons, in order to increase their ability to financially sustain themselves. A theatre play and 3 intercultural camps were organised for the children of the community, who worked together in planning these events. Cultural barriers were broken organising these meetings and the participants understood that by working together they can improve the life standards in their community. The results of the project had impact on the attitudes that community members and authorities have when interacting with each other.
