Summary of project results

The project “Education = Antidote to poverty” was addressed to the multi-ethnic rural communities from Unirea, Viziru and Sutesti, Braila County. The need to implement the project was given by the socio-economic conditions of these rural communities, where the level of poverty and social exclusion is high, and the risk of extreme poverty is 4 times higher compared to urban areas. Within the selected communities, the project activities were carried out predominantly in areas where there are large numbers of Roma ethnics and few employment opportunities. The goal of the project was to increase citizen participation in order to reduce disparities between ethnic groups. To achieve that, during the project implementation the following activities were carried out: roundtables approaching subjects related to multiculturalism, that were conducted in all 3 localities; a trade fair; a volunteering programme that helped 99 children prepare for school, called Rural Volunteer. Also a series of evening events (“Multiculturalism day”) were organized where attendants, Roma and non-Roma ethnics, informed the public authorities about their needs. Counselling and information sessions were offered to 622 people on topics like family life, changing attitudes towards reproduction, the effects of early marriage on the lives of their children, combating domestic violence, gender equality, access to social services. Qualification courses in the fields of carpentry and tailoring, cooking workshops for adults and a mini competition for small entrepreneurs were also organized during the project.
