Description

Aiming to raise awareness among youth groups towards gender equality and global citizenship, training will be provided to youth agents, through informal education methodologies, with a view to implement awareness-raising actions concerning these subjects. The training will be provided to 20 volunteers with a leader profile by 2 qualified trainers, and will address global citizenship, gender equality and cultural diversity. After the training sessions, these youth leaders will be responsible for training other youths, with the support of a pedagogical kit and multimedia material and the assistance and follow-up of a tutor. Awareness actions will also be promoted through the exhibition and discussion of films and documentaries, debates and other events related to the topics.

Summary of project results

Gender equality is ensured by the Portuguese Constitution and secondary legislation but is not fully in force in practice, mostly because mind-sets are not always in line with the principle of equal opportunities between men and women. It is therefore crucial to change mentalities and this should start in young ages, at school. Youth groups are available and ready to be mobilised, but are little aware while their leaders are little active in the areas of citizenship. The lack of critical spirit is reinforced by the lack of awareness that there are situations of inequality (opportunities, gender) and by the lack of knowledge of different realities, especially of other geographies and cultures. After the project more people are aware of inequality situations in Portugal and the need to overcome them, and some of them have been trained. The fact that the project was based on training replicator agents provides sustainability and dissemination. It is a long-term work to be able to reach all the Portuguese society, and particularly all young people. This work should be done in a steady way but step by step. The project has trained 21 youth agents (72 hours of training each), who on their turn have trained 329 youngsters (138 boys and 191 girls) divided in 15 groups, for a total of 116 hours of training each. 100 awareness raising actions have been organised, involving 1 978 participants, of which 1 069 women. A manual on these issues has been published both on hard copy and on the website to be downloaded. All targets proposed in the application were met or surpassed. The promoter NGO considers that new capacities have emerged from this project activities for the NGO itself and for its staff and next projects on this area will build on this experience and knowledge.
