Description

The goal of the project is to promote gender equality and counter domestic violence in the Portel County, a rural area in Alentejo, as well as advance citizenship issues such as racism among school children. The relevance of this project comes from the lack of information and support to women, which is deeper and aggravated in rural areas. The project will inform the community on the theme of prevention and combating domestic / family violence through awareness-raising activities regarding gender violence, dating violence and gender equality. 300 actions are to be promoted, and the project also includes the establishment of a permanent victim support office, which is expected to receive a total of 50 victims within the timeframe of the project. The project will also promote tolerance workshops against racism and actions directed towards children in scholar context regarding citizenship matters.

Summary of project results

The need to change mentalities regarding the issues of gender-based violence and gender equality in the Portel municipality (Alentejo), as well as other Human Rights issues, was the starting point to this project. Through awareness-raising activities directed towards the various local stakeholders, the promoter primarily aimed at reducing tolerance towards gender violence, and also created a victim support office which assisted 42 women up to the end of the project and worked with the local institutions in addressing concrete situations. The project helped the promoter improve its ability to address Human Rights issues in its region, and also raised awareness over a wide range of stakeholders, including children and youths – over twice the expected number of people attended the project’s various activities. The involvement of local institutions should also be highlighted, as some of the activities will be continued with their help, namely school sessions and following-up on victims.
