Description

The general objective is the creation of Active Communities Against Human Trafficking, with permanent local action networks composed of relevant entities and individuals. Pilot-project designed to be replicated in other geographies after evaluation, it is inspired by the Community in Action methodology implemented in the UK. Through the streamlining of inter-institutional relationships it aims to create local action networks, that will put in place local referral systems and local action plans, at the same time raising awareness and promoting community involvement in combating human trafficking by empowering relevant local actors. In terms of long term impacts the project will prevent further victims, help detect and support victims of trafficking in the community, and at the same time it will contribute to empower key actors and victims.

Summary of project results

Human trafficking is an important Human Rights issue which the promoter set out to address through a method which had not been used thus far in Portugal. The project’s goal was to create two networks to counter human traffic, at local level, involving local public, private and NGO stakeholders, by raising awareness regarding the issue and training teachers, health professionals and law-enforcement agents. These local networks were successfully implemented with considerable impact. Attendance was well over the initial expectations. 93 professionals received training, and awareness-raising activities reached over 6 300 people, thanks to the active involvement of the local stakeholders. The schools and local authorities proved instrumental in ensuring the success of the project. As for the future, the promoter will use the Community in Action methodologies again in addressing this issue. The project yielded important know-how.
