Summary of project results
The objectives were to make the biological, cultural and social aspects of the markets known to the educational community, with special emphasis on the marine resources that are marketed in them, and to propose to schools methodologies and innovative contents on marine resources and ocean to be integrated across all disciplines. The project focused on the good practices applicable to the exploration and conservation of the marine living resources and the sustainable management of the same, valuing simultaneously the social and cultural aspects of the markets, making the communication more effective, since it values not only cognitive aspects but also the aspects and related economic activities, both of which are fundamental in ocean literacy. The work carried out developed in two areas: School-level component: with the Alvalade School Group, which involved the participation of 10 groups. The students (199) participated in the guided visits to the Alvalade market, which involved identification of the species traded, an explanation of the operation of the market from the supply to the conservation of the fish. All these aspects were developed in direct contact with the technicians and merchants of the market. After the visit the students worked in the classroom in biological sampling sessions (fish dissection). Students produced works (plastic, posters and oral communications) on the knowledge learned, through the collaboration between several disciplines (environment study, natural sciences, visual education, technological education, geography, ICT) in a scientific mini-conference organized for this purpose. Handicrafts were still on display in the market for public disclosure and for closer ties between the educational community, the market and its workers; Creation and integration of the "Look to the fresh fish!" and "Biologist for a day" activities in the "MARE goes to school" educational program, as a way to guarantee the continuity of this project. Target groups: the educational community which involved the elementary school students and vocational education, their teachers, education assistants and management; Included an openness to society, aimed at the general public (children, youth, adults, the elderly, families) and which resulted from partnerships established during the project (Ciência Viva, National Museum of Natural History and Science, Valsassina College, Parish Council of Alvalade).website:
