Description

The project will be carried out on the site of the Castle in Pieskowa Skała in Małopolskie voivodeship, Kraków county. Project will facilitate promotion of the rich cultural-historical qualities of the region. The project will also support social integrity through endorsing the sense of joint responsibility for the region among its inhabitants. The objective of the project is: increasing the access to rich cultural offer to diverse target groups (adapting the rooms of the site for education-&-culture-related activities, digitalization of exhibits, creation of a Virtual Museum); improving the condition of the historic structure of the Castle in Pieskowa Skała: conducting conservation (partnership with Norsk Institutt for Luftforskring) and construction works. The project will benefit: pupils, students, persons with disabilities, tourists - at home and abroad including groups and individuals.

Summary of project results

The project was a part of a long-term conservation programme. It was carried out on the site of the Castle in Pieskowa Skała in Małopolskie voivodeship, Kraków county, Sułoszowa commune, in the period from 01.02.2014 to 30.04.2016. Work that was done: 1. Multidisciplinary conservation of the castle (façades of the main structure, walls and bastions, gallery courtyard) 2. Study of the decor of the interiors of the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel 3. Adapting the space in the outbuilding of the castle for education-&-culture-related purposes, purchase of equipment necessary for a modern classroom 4. Digitalization of selected collections and creating a virtual museum 5. Installation of an interactive kiosk in the outer courtyard 6. Installation of a mobile exhibition system in the inner courtyard General objective: Reducing social-economic differences and improving bilateral relations between Donor States and Beneficiary State. Direct objectives: Increasing the access to rich cultural offer to diverse target groups (adapting the rooms of the site for education-&-culture-related activities, digitalization of exhibits, creation of a Virtual Museum), Improving the condition of the historic structure of the Castle in Pieskowa Skała (conducting conservation and construction works). Wawel Royal Castle was cooperaiting the project in partnership with NILU – Norsk Institutt for Luftforskring – an institution with extensive experience in the field of air quality research and preventive conservation of cultural heritage. The project addressed such issues as: -bad shape of the façades, galleries and the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel – inability to take full advantage of the qualities of the site -lack of appropriate rooms and facilities to run interactive classes for children and the youth, to organize meetings, lectures, etc. for adults and senior citizens -lack of modern system of tourist information -lack of documented history of culture in digital form The implementation of the project enhanced regional processes of cultural development. The results of the project facilitated promotion of the rich cultural-historical qualities of the region. The project also supported social integrity through endorsing the sense of joint responsibility for the region among its inhabitants.

Summary of bilateral results

Wawel Royal Castle was cooperaiting with NILU – Norsk Institutt for Luftforskring – an institution with extensive experience in the field of air quality research and preventive conservation of cultural heritage. Each party had its own responsibilities, which guaranteed the realization of the project and achievement of the objectives. Beneficiary: 1. Managing and running the project; responsibility for execution of the agreement after the grant has been awarded, and for contacts between the partners and MCNH’s Fund Operator. 2. Supervising the expenditure of financial resources, the timeliness of payments made to contractors and to the Partner, and the settlement of tranches obtained as part of the grant; developing reports; ensuring means to cover VAT costs and other non-eligible costs. Partner: 1. Provision of all information and documents required by the Applicant to perform their obligations with respect to reports required under the agreement; performance of the assigned tasks according to the program specified in the application. 2. Providing guidance and assistance to the Polish Beneficiary during study visits in Norway – with respect to historical background and topics related to conservation challenges at and environmental risks to the study sites. 3. Preparation of workshop presentations for discussions between the partners devoted to aspects of environmental management of heritage sites, as well as to serve as input to exchange, share, and transfer knowledge, experience, and best practices in the context of international projects – with particular focus on management, financing, and settlement, and to take new initiatives to enhance partner cooperation and to broaden the scope thereof. The project has allowed the parties to get to know a wide range of issues related to the control, management and shaping of environmental conditions for the cultural heritage of the partner country, and for the Polish side, with particular regard to the possibility of gathering experiences useful for the management and protection of the historic complexes of the Wawel Royal Castle and the Pieskowa Rock Castle. The meetings and workshops offered the opportunity to exchange experiences, knowledge and information, to learn both Polish and Norwegian experiences in managing and running international projects - organizations and procedures.
