Description

The project will increase the focus on vulnerable groups in prisons through the development of training programs for prison staff and for inmates. The project will organize group and individual work of highly trained specialists in order to help re-socialization of persons released from prison and reduce the likelihood of further deepening the process of criminalization. The project will enhance the capacity of staff at the prison Pleven to implement specialized programs for rehabilitation. The project will increase the professional capacity of the prison staff through case studies, assessment of needs, evaluation of risks, sentence planning and elaboration of effective ways for serving a sentence. After the project the trained personnel will be able to determine the risk assessment and the needs of each newcomer and sentence planning. The main target group of the project is the prison staff at Pleven prison, so that the prison personnel can work with the inmates for their better social inclusion and for the protection of their rights and needs.

Summary of project results

The project was motivated by the need to enhance the professional competence of prison’s staff of prison in Pleven to work with sentenced to imprisonment of persons, in particular with representatives of the three most vulnerable groups - minorities, drug addicts, and people with disabilities. It was aimed at supporting the process of socio-correction effects on prisoners and their preparation for a life of freedom, and raising public and institutional engagement to the places of imprisonment. Each one of the target groups was involved in specific activities aimed to achieve influence, changing attitudes, behavior, knowledge, and competencies. Employees in places of imprisonment participated in training activities, supervision of staff, exchange visits, public, and media events. The organized under the project working visits of the Pleven prison staff to 4 other prisons in Bulgaria for the led to a new level of professional partnership, as well as to identification of opportunities for collaboration in subsequent initiatives towards the reform process in places of imprisonment.
