Description

The project addresses the difficulties faced by the families of children with mental disabilities in Targovishte municipality, excluded from the community and lacking support and medical, social, educational and legal information. The project aims at improving the quality of their lives through developing their skills for mutual aid and self-help. First, an information campaign will be launched and 60 families will be attracted to join the project. 3 mutual aid groups of 10 families each will be set up based on similar needs and will receive individual counseling. The groups will meet for 2 hours every month to identify the needs to be addressed. The groups will be trained in 5 workshops to carry out advocacy actions. Finally, the model for social support and empowerment used will be published on Facebook. The project will benefit not only the selected families but also people with mental disabilities in general. The partner will provide the premises and the experts for the project.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the difficulties faced by the families of children with mental disabilities in Targovishte municipality, excluded from the community and lacking support and medical, social, educational and legal information. It resulted in improved skills for taking care of children, increased awareness, reduced stress and anxiety, improved family environment, increased confidence in the children and parents in 39 families of children with disabilities from Targovishte District. The project boosted children’s confidence, involvement and in-school and out-of-school performance. The training helped the parents adopt alternative ways of coping, boosted their competence, sense of belonging and developed their self-help and mutual help skills. The parent association set up under the project will continue to work on empowerment of disadvantaged groups and help them solve their issues. The parents will continue exchanging information, experience and ideas. The experts will continue to provide voluntary consultations. The partner Dar Association was actively involved.
