Description

The project addresses the challenges faced by young Roma with high-risk behavior (involved in prostitution, drug use, LGBT) in the city of Sliven (discrimination, domestic violence, human trafficking). The project aims at empowering these people to know and protect their rights. First, 120 Roma youth will take part in weekly support and self-help sessions to know how to seek help, recognize and counteract domestic violence and trafficking. Second, 30 of the participants will attend a 2-day workshop on human rights, work with the institutions and volunteering. Third, 30 participants will attend a 2-day workshop on prevention of domestic violence and human trafficking. Fourth, the young Roma will be able to discuss their issues with the authorities and NGOs at a round table. Finally, the project ideas will be spread via an information campaign. The project will benefit young Roma with high-risk behavior, the Roma and local communities, NGOs and the authorities.

Summary of project results

The project was targeted at young people from the Roma community with risky behaviour who are the most common victims of multiple discrimination, domestic violence and trafficking in human beings. The self-help and support groups set up under the project motivated the young people to make a difference creating a network of socially active young people empowered to exercise their rights of active citizens tolerant to each other and accepting the others. The project reached directly more than 120 young Roma from the town of Sliven who were empowered and trained in human rights, tolerance and mutual acceptance. What was critical for the young people at risk was the opportunity to communicate in a tolerant, positive environment which also helped overcome their social isolation. An awareness-raising campaign was held in the Roma community which contributed to better awareness of the issues related to discrimination, violence and trafficking. The young people taking part in the training sessions and the round table made direct contacts with the representatives of institutions, civil organizations and the media addressing the issues of young people. After the project end at least 20 young Roma at risk from the relevant social subgroups will continue to work as volunteers in the community to raise awareness about human rights and prevention of domestic violence and trafficking in human beings.
