Description

The project is necessary to increase the efficiency of the FGD process, so that PGE GiEK S.A. will meet the standards required by the EU Industrial Emissions Directive. This will significantly improve environmental protection. The aim of the project is to reduce emissions from fuel combustion and improve air quality by reducing emissions of sulphur dioxide from 400 mg/m3 to a level no higher than 200 mg/m3 as of January 2016. The project will contribute to the modernisation of the FGD systems in Units 5 and 6 of Elektrownia Bełchatów (EB). The benefits of the project will be realised both by PGE GiEK S.A. through reduced environmental charges for exceeding emission limits, and the environmental conditions in Poland by lowering levels of sulphur dioxide in the air.

Summary of project results

The modernisation of the flue gas desulphurisation plant of units No. 5 and 6 in the Bełchatów Power Plant has reduced SO2 emissions to the levels required under the IED Directive, i.e. below 200 mg/Nm3, with a simultaneous increase in the sulphur content in the fuel from 0.78% (the average in the years 2009 – 2011) to 1.23% - as of the year 2016. Furthermore, the execution of the Project has facilitated a reduction in the emissions of dust, heavy metals. The scope of the Project comprised the modernisation of the flue gas desulphurisation plant of power generation units No. 5 and 6 in the Bełchatów Power Plant, in particular the alteration of the absorbers consisting in the installation of an additional sprinkling level in the form of a sieve plate, the replacement of the mist eliminators, the alteration and extension of the oxygenation systems together with the installation of an additional air blower. Also done modernisation of the sorbent slurry pumps, the release pumps and the other auxiliary pumps with a view to increasing their capacity, the extension of the gypsum dehydration system consisting in the implementation of a new dehydration technology - the replacement of the belt filters with centrifuges, the replacement of the gypsum hydrocyclones system, the extension of the electrical wiring systems, and the replacement of the control and measurement instruments system type RS3 with a system type Delta V for the purpose of its unification with the control and measurement instruments systems used in the other flue gas desulphurisation plants.
