Description

Air quality is currently at the forefront of the issues related to urban space, which are important for the residents of Kraków. Therefore, city authorities make efforts aimed at fighting with low emissions. Kraków needs to be ventilated, because its unfavorable geographical position makes the air circulation in the city difficult. The implementation of the project comprises primarily a strategy calculated for many years, which will allow for such spatial planning, which will result in a better air exchange and regeneration in Kraków. Result of the project will be to provide a modern database of spatial information, obtained from the monitoring, control and measurements performed with the use of modern technology, in order to support the decision-making process, aimed at improving the quality of residents’ life, according to the idea of sustainable development. The project will address these challenges by the following activities: assessment of the conditions of ventilation in Kraków using an advanced modeling system, low emission inventory, control of elimination of solid fuel stoves under the computer-assisted, Low Emission Reduction Program, Map of land cover and the overall inventory of land covered by vegetation, with a particular emphasis on urban green areas, computerized management system for green areas and detailed inventory of green areas, promotion, seminars, trainings and workshops Even if the residents of Kraków are not direct beneficiaries of the project, they will be the most affected by measurable effects of its implementation and will benefit most from its implementation. Employees of Kraków administration will gain excellent tools for spatial planning. Indirect beneficiaries will also include other public authorities, as well as research centers.

Summary of project results

The project was one of the forms of response of the authorities of the Municipality of Krakow to the citizens' demands for air quality, and was also an excellent tool for the fight against low emissions. Within the framework of the project specialized measuring equipment was bought - an automatic meteorological station measuring temperature, humidity, radiation and SODAR - a device for measuring wind speed and direction. The project resulted in providing a modern spatial information database, obtained through monitoring, control and measurements made using state-of-the-art technologies to support the decision-making process to improve the quality of life of residents, in line with the idea of sustainable development. The built-in monitoring system is a database supporting the spatial planning process. An important target group of the project is the inhabitants of Cracow, who should feel the effects of the equipment of Cracow administration staff in the spatial planning tools. A map of coverage and rough terrain was made - "Atlas of land cover and ventilation of Krakow", which received two prizes in the Map of the Year contest, organized by the Main Board of the Association of Polish Cartographers. In addition, a low emission inventory was carried out, which resulted in the identification of almost 24,000 burning points, furnaces, boiler rooms and solid fuel fireplaces in Cracow, as well as controls on the liquidation of the above - sources of air pollution. The project included a monitoring visit and numerous conferences and seminars to improve organizational skills.
