Description

This project is needed because anthropopression eliminated a lot species of birds from the western half of Poland. Since 2006, as a result of the creation of new habitat conditions (islands associated with the mines of gravel) populations of several species listed in the Birds Directive were reborn. However, they are at risk. Since 2006 only one year has ended with a successful breeding season. The most common reasons of loss broods are fluctuations in the water levels of the neighboring rivers Odra and Warta. The objective of the project is the revival and stabilization of populations of several species in ornithofauna, as well as breeding success. The project aims at creating four breeding areas that will be associated with safety features, and independent of fluctuations in water levels in the flood of the Odra and Warta Rivers. These places will also be secured against breeding robbery from the American mink, raccoon and other land-based predators. Ornithofauna of Western Poland and the local community, which already enjoy in the vicinity of the “Ujście Warty” National Park, are expected to benefit.

Summary of project results

Results of implementation of the entire project: Increased protection of native ecosystems against invasive alien species; number of invasive alien species catalogued or monitored: 20; number of invasive alien species, which pressure was limited within implementation of projects aimed at achievement of outcome: 2. The scope of works was divided into three main tasks: 1. purchase and installation of floating nesting platforms (3 pcs.); 2. recreation of a marsh with controlled water level; 3. monitoring, educational and promotional activity. The goal of the planned actions was to increase breeding effectiveness of birds in the valleys of the Odra and Warta rivers. The marsh was recreated on 2 hectares of wetland by flooding them in a controlled manner. The project included publishing (book and flyers), training courses for the locals that included school trips to the area included in the project, and encouraged the young to an active participation in protecting the wildlife of the islands.
