Description

The intention is to develop a new product, cold asphalt mix. Its use will ensure mitigation of CO2 emissions by 90% in road construction and 60% in production process compared to the current emission in the sector. The product will be available in retail chains as well. The technology of road repair works has been significantly simplified. Within the framework of the project, the product (recipe) will be developed in compliance with the road repair requirements of Norway. Testing will be carried out and a control system will be developed. The traditional practice of road construction and repair up until now: Under the so-called “Nordic” climatic conditions, work on the restoration of road cover can be performed only during the months when the average daily air temperature is at least +5 C, which means that these works can be performed only during summer months. That significantly hinder the planning and performance of works (with increased cost) throughout the calendar year. Cold asphalt can be applied during any season, under unfavourable weather conditions, as well as in places inaccessible for heavy machinery, for instance, in mountain areas, house yards, railway places etc. The Projects’ goal correspond to aims specified in Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia until 2030.

Summary of project results

Within the Norway grant programme Green Industry Innovation the company AV recycling Ltd. has been supported in Latvia. The company has developed a new product — cold asphalt mix. Within the project several research and development activities were carried out in order to find the best solution for new type cold asphalt that can be used in European market. In order for traffic-hazardous or the so-called “accident holes” to be repaired regardless of weather conditions within 24 hours following the moment they are detected, cold bitumen asphalt technology, which is the only method that can be used to cover holes during winter, must be used for their repair. Thus, the demand for cold asphalt mix increases, especially during winter months, evenly distributing throughout the year, as compared to hot asphalt. Project was implemented within the Green Technology incubator supported by Norway grants.
