Description

Eastern Hungary is one of the top regions worldwide regarding horseradish production. Based on this production, huge amount of horseradish waste is generated year by year. The waste contains bioactive agents like isothiocyanates which in huge concentrations are toxic to all forms of life. Therefore these vegetable wastes must be treated to eliminate toxic concentrations before deposition. The objective of the project is to extract the bioactive materials from the vegetable wastes in form of an essential oil by applying newly developed techniques, and to convert this oil into valuable, marketable products like; (i) horseradish essential oil for culinary purposes; (ii) a product with fungicide and algaecide effects; (iii) horseradish peroxidase applicable in molecular biology. Thereafter, the leftover bioactive agent free horseradish mush might be utilized as forage or might be composted. The donor partner (Norwegian Institute for Water Research) has an essential role in the testing algaecide effect of the developed product. The project will benefit first and foremost the health of the environment and secondly the product developers.

Summary of project results

Eastern Hungary is one of the top regions worldwide regarding horseradish production. Owing to this huge amounts of horseradish wastes are generated year by year. Since contain bioactive agents like isothiocyanates that in huge concentrations are toxic to all forms of life these vegetable wastes must be treated, eliminated from the environment. Therefore, the objective of the project was to extract the bioactive materials from the vegetable wastes in form of an essential oil by applying newly developed techniques, and to convert this oil into valuable, marketable products like (i) horseradish essential oil for culinary purposes; (ii) a product with fungicide and algaecide effects; (iii) horseradish peroxidase applicable in molecular biology. Thereafter, the resulted bioactive agent free leftover horseradish mush can be utilized as forage or can be composted. Obtained results of the project: 1. Description of production-technology regarding how to obtain horseradish essential oil from low quality horseradish roots considered as wastes; 2. Description of production-technology regarding the isolation and purification of horseradish peroxidase isoenzymes form horseradish side-roots; 3. Description of a product with algicide effect obtained from vegetable essential oil mixture; 4. Description of a product with fungicide effect obtained from vegetable essential oil mixture; 5. Patent application – Fungicide product and its application 6. Patent application – Production of essential oil containing allyl-isothiocyanate It can be summarized that the objective of the project were achieved. The obtained results long-term can contribute to a more sustainable greener environment. The project will benefit first and foremost the health of the environment and secondly the product developers.
