Description

This project focuses on the tradition of solidarity in Hungarian literary heritage and connects it with contemporary social tensions. Beside addressing the general audience of Hungarian literature, it aims to reach secondary school students who tend to have very little knowledge about contemporary Hungarian society. The campaign provides students with means to recognise and reflect upon social inequalities. The project is based on video interviews with well-known contemporary writers who tell about exemplary texts of solidarity by earlier writers. These texts, together with the videos and texts written by participating students will be featured on the project website, which thus will manifest the tradition of solidarity through generations. Teachers’ work will be assisted by a methodology manual written for the project. The best of students’ work will earn prizes. Fort he general audience, the campaign pushes issues concerning the social responsibility of artists and writers into the focus. The project also aims to mediate between the elite discourse and the everyday experience of young people through encouraging their creativity. The Association of Teachers of Hungarian will be our partner in reaching students and supporting teachers. Supported by print, electronic and online media, the campain combines traditional teaching methods with new media tools, thus has a good chance to reach and affect all three target groups (general audience, teachers, students).

Summary of project results

This project focused on the tradition of solidarity in Hungarian literary heritage and connected it with contemporary social tensions. Supported by print, electronic and online media, the campaign combined traditional teaching methods with new media tools to reach the general audience as well as literature teachers and secondary school students. The campaign provided students with means to recognize and reflect upon social inequalities. In the project 8 contemporary writers commented on exemplary texts of solidarity and contemporary cases of inequality. In 20 secondary schools more than 700 students studied the videos and texts, and learned about inequality present in contemporary Hungarian society. Students also wrote their own texts (short stories, poems, essays) based on their own experience, and the best student works were given prizes. The Association of Teachers of Hungarian acted as partners. All material produced in the project is available on the Society's website.
