Description

The project goal is to show the urban youth and their families in Miskolc, Hungary how good it is to live close to nature, and how important it is to have an environmentally friendly life style. For that purpose a summer hiker camp will be organized (with no electricity, no internet, living in yurt tents) during which a new Nature Study Trail will be created connecting separated villages in the South-Bükk mountains.

Summary of project results

The project aimed at environmental awareness raising among city pupils of Miskolc who are less aware of the natural values of their own living environment (and as such, of the Bükk mountains), and for whose lifestyles outdoor activities play less and less important role. In cooperation with 4 schools nearly 100 students, at the age of 10-16, have been made to step out of their comfort zone, partly involving their families too. Through various in- and outdoor activities their knowledge and skills were developed in relation to local values and hiking, while their community building and environmental education were supported by three family hiking days, a camp for peer helpers, and the creation of the “Sowers of Bükk” study path in which, following their preliminary training, students were actively involved as well. In addition, the study path has got extended with interactive functions by the means of an application written both for iOs and Android platforms. As such, the partly virtual study path makes the environmental education and ecotourism options and infrastructure of the area more colourful and enjoyable on the long run.
