Description

Housing conditions of the most vulnerable social groups have become fairly unstable, the proportion of government-owned rental housing is a mere 3%. The objective of the project is helping people living in poor housing conditions by joining forces with NGOs and policy makers. The project will achieve the renovation of two, currently inoperative, houses in Kispest, which will serve as transitory homes for families. The project outputs are consultation with cooperation partners and residents, involving and coordination of volunteers helping in the organisation process and in the building work; technical preparation; floor-plan modification; testing mechanical and electrical systems; flooring repair and renovation. The target groups are residents living in social housing having rent arrears; prospective residents of the Kispest Temporary Family Home; volunteers.

Summary of project results

The Social Housing Reconstruction Camp Association has been organising housing reconstructions since its founding in 2011. Their main target group has always been one of the most vulnerable social groups is Hungary: people living in municipality-owned social housing with rent arrears. The most recent project was carried out in the 19th district of Budapest, Hungary, involving local tenants and volunteers as well. During the 2 years of the project two short-term shelter flats have been reconstructed, among others by 24 tenants. Altogether, their sweat equity was worth more than 1.1 million HUF, this sum has been deducted from their arrears. The reconstruction affected the whole sewage, heating and electrical system of the flats, as well as the complete renewal of the roof. The contribution of the district municipality reached almost 4/5 of all costs, as they participated actively in the works. Altogether it was a rare example of NGO-municipality cooperations in Hungary.
