Description

36.000 people live in slavery in Hungary, most of them work in the agriculture sector. Problems regarding the issue are illegal work, overtime, problems with the payment of the wages or even deny it, inhuman residential circumstances (no water, electricity availability). The problem is laid in supermarkets unethical business policies and in squeezed prizes because producers compensate the missing income with exploitation of agriculture workers. The objective of the project is to demonstrate that slavery is not just the problem of developing countries by calling attention on the responsibility of supermarkets and even consumers and by generating a conversation in society on the problem. The project promoter starts a petition call for citizen action, and supermarkets to spark their business policies and will implement an online communication campaign with 60 appearance in different online magazines, and several millions reader. During the project an action event will be organized and a petition with involving directly citizens. Target groups are consumers who are not interested an well-informed in ethical consumption issues, and the 36.000 Hungarian illegal workers, who are directly affected by the problem. The project promoter is going to prepare the online campaign and the action event with relevant civil organizations and media partners: Anthropolis, Amnesty Int., www.vs.hu, www.atlatszo.hu, www.444.hu.

Summary of project results

Based on international researches the number of contemporary slaves in Hungary is ca. 36.000, most of them are working in agriculture. All of the outputs of the project (articles, videos) are collected on a subsite and will be available on the website of TVE http://tudatosvasarlo.hu/alma The campaigne raised awareness about the working conditions on apple plantations in Hungary, and with a small database got help to buy ethical fruit products trough short supplay chains. Representatives from 10 different relevant agricultural institutes and state offices particiapated on the workshop, and exexpressed to be open to further coworking in this issue. With 1 report/article 1 street action 1 workshop 1 online communication campaigne before and after street action during 4 week we reached altogether nearly 1.400.000 people. The beneficiaries are extremly marginalies people, who are very difficult to be reached and involved.
