Description

Aphasia is a consequence of STROKE, accidents and brain diseases. People with Aphasia have problems to use the language /speak/ while they understand, think and feel. This may lead to losing jobs, friends, marriage and so on. The Ombudsman report contains support, care and rehabilitation for such people, but this is unsolved in Hungary. The goal of the project is improving the communication skills of people with Aphasia. The target group is people with aphasia and their family members. Rehabilitation is extremely important for the ones who are under 30 years. They neither receive disabled subsidy nor pension. Through the projects outcomes (205 new recipients, 4 new employees, 3 new services, patient record to measure the rate of healing) we expect to improve their quality of life, social security, reduce their social exclusion. Our partners are Hospital Péterfy Sándor with one of the largest stroke center locally and the Demosthenes Association- family doctors directing patients to us.

Summary of project results

Aphasia is s peach disorder that occurs due to stroke, accidents or other brain damages. People with aphasia can think and feel normally but they are unable to communicate their thoughts and feelings. According to the report of the Hungarian Ombudsman „presently there is no proper support, care and rehabilitation system in Hungary for people with aphasia”. The aim of the project was to improve the communication and speech skills of patients with aphasia, strengthen their interest representation, and decrease social marginalisation. The direct target group were people with aphasia living in or near Budapest, some of them having additional disabilities. Participants received individualized, complex support, by various therapeutic methods and counselling. Project results improved their social situation and quality of life, while decreasing their social exclusion.
