Description

In the frame of the project we would like to improve the relationship between local farmers and their customers by increasing the consumption of locally produced healthy food, the extension of environmentally conscious consumption, and strengthen local economy. They would like to find more marketing channels for local farmers, at families in Nyiregyhaza with locally produced high quality food. Meanwhile a community will be built up. They expect 50 families, 20 farmers, and 50-200 people who are interested. During public meetings they try to organize discussions with the participation of a performer and the audience, and want to give higher publicity to food self-sufficiency to form people’s approach. Running their shopping community, being a model for consumers, will bring positive results in the society. The costumers (50 families), farmers (20) might experience the coherent power of our society, and our model spreads among the habitants of our town.

Summary of project results

Future Near Home Society addressed the empowerment of local economy with the support and collaboration of the community. The Society created a tool - Nyíregyháza Basket Community - as a shopping circle, in order to inspire local consumers to invest into local production that enables the growth of local farmers. The aims were to change the habits of consumers, to support healthy food-consumption, to make citizens feel responsible for environment and the strengthening of the local economy. The community events provided a great field for learning together about sustainability, economic and community oriented questions, thus all members of the community became able to act together in order to reach the required result, what was strengthening the trend of a self-production of food in the town. They aimed to ensure the living of the growing number of local farmers by supporting their work and also to show a realistic picture regarding to the need for the local consumption of the local productions.
