Description

People who live in the slums are disadvantaged and are mostly Romas with low educational level. They mostly earn their living with seasonal works, public works and get a low financial aid thus they are poor, vulnerable, their advocacy skills are weak, the children are often ill, their opportunities for playing games are limited. Many of them are bullying and hurting others in order to reduce their inner tense. Many children have low self-esteem; they are under motivated and show inability. The project promoter with the local parents already recognized the need for a community space where children can spend their free time usefully and in safe. Thus the main objective of the project is to implement a research that maps the local society, its problems, needs and possible sources. Based on the results a flat will be renovated and become a community place. The project promoter will organize forums, trainings, workshops and a photo exhibition. The programs aim to integrate the main target group that includes about 800 people who live in the Hős Street, Budapest. 10-15 educational and social institutions and civic organizations are also expected to be involved.

Summary of project results

The neighbourhood of Hős utca in Budapest is a segregated slum, a so called ghetto, which continuously degraded and ruined in the last couple of years. The quality of life of the community became very bad and their situation and conditions become even dangerous at the same time. The project focused on the revitalization of this neighbourhood by various community development means, a community house was established and different kinds of services were developed and offered to the local inhabitants. The community house offers diverse services, counselling for adults and children as well, and also other organizations can use it for their programs. By these programs the prejudices against and segregation of the local community were decreased as well. A research was concluded in the neighbourhood by the project implementers in order to assess the needs and living conditions of the local inhabitants, altogether 73 households and 300 persons were reached and involved into this process. The programs concluded in the community house were planned and organized based on the needs detected by the research. The results were presented on a professional workshop at the ELTE University as well. And many organizations got in touch with the neighbourhood as a result of the community building process of the project implementers, thus now many organizations work here with and for the local community, and increased media presence is generated. The stigmas of the neighborhood were successfully deprived, as now it is considered as a slum where people live in deep poverty, instead of the place full of with danger and crimes, as it was determined earlier. The project had relevant role in changing the situation and circumstances of children and youth living here. Due to the diverse programs offered to them in the frame of the project, and also after its closure, a measurable development can be observed in the behaviour of local children and youth.
