"Our aim is to make those people working in public sector institutions and getting into contact with visually Impaired persons, aware of the problems of people with disabilities to provide more effective and appropriate help, to achieve smooth administration process for both parties’ satisfaction.In frame of awareness-raising days we highlight the difficulties of VI people, and outline possible ways of solutions for those people working at 20 institutions in various municipalities of B-A-Z County, involving VI persons. Structure of an awareness-raising day: General information on visual impairment. Getting experiences in practice while blindfolded. Considering problematic situations from the points of view of VI. Finding common ways of solution for the outlined situations. Cooperation partner: Perspective Foundation for the Education of the Visually Impaired (PFEVI). We intend to extend the experiences of the project later also for public service providers and commercial unit"

Summary of project results

Despite the statutory requirement Equal Treatment, practice shows Visually Impaired people disadvantageously treated by public authorities. Awareness-raising days were held in 20 public institutions in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County involving 163 officers to draw attention to special difficulties of VI people and convey ways of solution. Project was implemented by 15 VI persons and tiphlopedagogic students. A short video was made about one of the events and an information booklet in 500 copies with special knowledge, a useful help for clerks dealing with VI people. Attitude of officers started to change, their knowledge completed with special skills. The Advocacy activities improved. Direct target group: VI people either living or wishing to manage official matters in BAZ County. Indirect target group: officers in contact with VI people, relatives accompanying a VI person, people with other disabilities entering the offices, other staff members having not participated at the project.
