Description

The immediate urgency of the project was spurred by the judgement of the Békés County Court of March 27 2014, which condoned the the anti-Roma hate speech according to which there is "Gypsy criminality". Our objective is to facilitate active citizenship, active speaking out against hate speech, raising public awareness and exercising public pressure for concrete political measures. The expected outcomes of the project are that the target group becomes more sensitive to the issue, and will be more outspoken on the issue so active citizenship will be strengthened. The number of postcards sent will be an indicator of how many citizens have become active. The number of online postcards sent will show the extent the foreign public have been reached. We can also measure the result by the concrete measures taken by the addressees of the postcards, the visitors on the online sites, the number of reports in the media and the number of visitors of online spots. The primary target group of the action is the European citizen making a statement against hate speech. Romaversitas and the ERTF that help us get in touch with university students and foreign NGOs respectively.

Summary of project results

Racist hate speech has become widespread in Hungary. The objective of the project was to raise public awareness and facilitate active speaking out against hate speech, thus putting pressure for concrete political measures. The citizens reached became sensitive to the issue and they took action by signing the campaign postcards,of which we printed 4500. 2000 can be traced to have reached the addressees. The media attention and video interviews gave publicity to the campaign and the public handing over of signed postcards to the addressees was a form of recognition by the officials.Beneficieries were reached personally or through activists and organizations. The main benefits of the project:1.making the public aware of hate speech and of a simple way of advocacy against it 2.cooperation with other NGOs.The partner helped us disseminate the postcards, which were digitally made,so they can be re-formulated for similar campaigns. The NGOs in the project created an informal anti-racist network.
