Description

The project’s aim is to prepare Roma NGOs to use basic legal aid tools so they can respond to infringements against their community and advance their interests more efficiently. As a result of a more conscious approach towards infringements, increased legal aid capacities and their widespread communication, these NGOs will become important factors locally. The attitudes of those responsible for committing violations will also change and infringements will decrease. During the project we compile training modules and practical guides for local legal aid activities, train 10 local legal aid activists and support their work with mentoring. We respond to infringements against local communities in partnership with these activists. The project will directly reach 10 local Roma NGOs but its methodology and results will be useful for the nearly 300 other Roma NGOs in Hungary as well as organizations working with other vulnerable groups.

Summary of project results

The project responded to the long-standing lack of Roma community paralegals providing on-the-spot legal support in Hungary’s poorest county. First, training modules on the most serious issues affecting Roma were produced, ranging from the public works scheme to child protection services and conflict management. NEKI then selected and trained 13 experienced local Roma activists. Consultation days were also held, and beneficiaries were asked to voice their opinion on the materials and share their local problems. NEKI kept in constant contact with the participants via social media and personal meetings, as well as provided legal help for their problems and mentorship if necessary. 9 practical guides and 3 education DVDs based on the training modules were also made, for distribution. Sustainability is provided for by the establishment of the JOGOS (“LEGAL”) Assocation by the participants as well as their deepened legal knowledge, empowerment and increased local political capital.
