Description

The project aims at providing children the pleasure of experiencing nature addressing the civilisatory problem of the loss of immediate links to nature characteristic for our times. In the newly created “Barcsay magic garden”, as the most important outcome of the project, groups of kindergarten and elementary school students will participate in non-formal environmental education made up of theoretical and practical activities. They will look after a spice garden and enjoy the art of composting, while the wider community of Berettyóújfalu will be engaged with the organisation’s environmental work as well with the means of setting up a furnished community space and an environmental information office.

Summary of project results

The goal of the project was to mitigate general lifestyle-related environmental pollution on the local level and to overcome infrastructural shortcomings of the association hindering its educational and awareness raising activities. The main outcome of the project is the “Barcsay magic garden” and a community centre that were created in Berettyóújfalu, Estern Hungary, with the renovation and restoration of an old garden and house on a property passed to the association recently. In the house an environmental information point was opened that provided, among other services, household waste treatment services for local citizens, while the garden with its new educational facilities hosted altogether 32 workshops for about 400 people of various ages and different groups, but mostly groups of kindergarten and elementary school students. Before the realisation of the restoration, in cooperation with the local museum, 7 workshops were held for nearly 150 pupils and teachers of the local primary schools and kindergardens focusing on different aspects of sustainable lifestyles – especially waste prevention. The project was communicated through organizing and participating at different local events reaching out several thousands of people. As an ultimate result the project promoter has managed both to develop its infrastructural capacities and involve a large number of people of various stakeholders groups raising their environmental awareness.
