Description

Changes in the natural water fluctuation formed the present water runoff’s monotone and dramatic decrease. The most important task in the area is to preserve or - in case - increase safety in flood- and inland water protection. The dam and reservoir of Kányaháza was built after the damage caused by floods in May, 1970 on the Romanian river-system, which has the biggest influence on the Túr river’s water fluctuation and on the possibilities of Öreg-Túr water supplement. Streams that flow into the reservoir (finished in 1979) are collecting waters from a 375 km2 extensional river-basin (this is the 30 % of the whole river-basin). Statistics about the annual maximum water runoffs says the average submitted water runoffs have increased, so the maximum value of floods have increased also and the danger of flood is mitigated because the reservoir is put in action. Operating the reservoir is advantageous in case of flood, but modify disadvantageously the water fluctuation on Túr when the water-level is low. The main aim of the project is to improve the water balance of the river Öreg-Túr during the extreme weather periods and also providing better irrigation conditions in the whole area by raising low water-levels on the upper area of the river. The project is the second phase of the Öreg-Túr river’s water system rehabilitation, which focuses on the upper area of the river. The project activities consist of developing and reconstructing river dams, developing new management/operational system which includes a monitoring system (building of automatic water level measuring stations and several flood gates to control water levels). The project is impacting 7 settlements along the Öreg-Túr (17 869 people) from which directly impacting three (Kölcse, Sonkád, Túristvándi), plus the government and the local self-governments, who is responsible for protecting the environment, mainly for organizing the operative defences and for producing inland water safety.

Summary of project results

The main aim of the project was to improve the water balance of the river Öreg-Túr during the extreme weather periods and also providing better irrigation conditions in the whole area by raising low water-levels on the upper area of the river. The project is the second phase of the Öreg-Túr river’s water system rehabilitation, which focuses on the upper area of the river. The project is impacting 7 settlements along the Öreg-Túr from which directly impacting three (Kölcse, Sonkád, Túristvándi), plus the government and the local local-governments, who are responsible for protecting the environment, mainly for organizing the operative defences and for assuring inland water safety. The essence of the Öreg-Túr rehabilitation was to raise the water level with 80 cm at the dam site by upgrading the existing flood gates, constructing a riverbed dam, building automatic water level measuring stations and several flood gates to control water levels and modifying the current operating system. As a consequence, the water flow entering at the Sonkad point can run at higher water level for more than 70 km part of Öreg-Túr river-system, and it would be a solution for the Túr-branch’s water supplement at Kölcse point. This, beside the inland water protection effects, will have serious benefits in water management and in the river's ecology. The project has been completed in time, all the deliverables, indicators and project outputs contracted have been achieved. The most important project outputs are listed below: • Three dikes and three water level monitoring stations constructed; • Four sluices constructed, one sluice reconstructed; • Environmental impact assessment study developed; • River bed cleaning on 1100 m; • Population who's living conditions will improve through the project 12869 capita; • Increase in retained water volume 150000 m3; • Water level increase by 90 cm; • Water retention area increase by 37 ha; • Inland water management area increase by 17904 ha; • Area with irrigation capacity increased 20 ha; • River planes developed; • Under the Communication activities the project promoter has organized events, developed promotional materials, delivered presentations, organized press event, appeared in local media, developed the project website; • The project promoter was active in bilateral activities; Project website: http://www.oregturrehabilitacio.hu/index.php/en/
