Description

There is a lack of a nationwide, high spatial resolution database containing sufficient amount of quality data for analysing crop response to a number of factors, including: i) temperature, ii) precipitation and CO2, as well as to management condition changes supporting early warning systems in food security and formulating short term adaptive management strategies, iii) carrying out climate change related impact projections, iv) formulating long term climate change adaptation strategies, v) providing scientific background for policy makers as well as for policy implementation monitoring. There is also lack of utilizing the state of the art scientific tools in elaborating a comprehensive methodology for estimating the impacts of climatic change. The project aims to develop methodology for characterizing climate impact and vulnerability indicators of the agriculture, forestry and related ecosystem services in Hungary. Through the results of the AGRATeR project the adaptation measures in the agri-sector might get more importance in the long term strategic planning of the natural resource management. The project will provide further sector specific information to the National Adaptation Geo- Information System (NAGiS). The project focuses on providing with additional information for the NAGiS on the arable cultivation, forestry and grassland management on the probable impacts of climate change, and on the vulnerability and resilience of the single subsystems and areas. The results of the project will offer useful data for the decision makers, researchers, stakeholders of the economic and infrastructure development sector, land use planning and also for the wider public. Main target groups are Researchers, University students and professors. Based on the AGRATéR methodology the NATéR system will be expanded with new, comprehensive agriculture related data layers that open up new possibilities in front of the identified target groups.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project to support the extension of National Adaptation Geo-information System (NAGiS) to the agricultural sector (AGRAGiS), by producing country-level and high-resolution (10 x 10 km) agricultural-related (crop production, forest and grassland management) data layers (derivatives) for NAGiS database, with methods based on static and dynamic models, which promote the development of so far most effective adaptation strategies to reduce the expected negative impacts of climate change. All planned result have been achieved, the most important project outputs are listed below: • One project objects GIS database; • Data categories and the methodology for their development; • One meta-database incorporated into the NAGIS; • One climatic exposure and one sensitivity indicators database; • One expected impact indicators database; • One adaptability indicators database; • Three vulnerability analysis; • One GAP analysis; • Under Communication activities the project promoter has developed the project website and organized events;
