Description

This project aims to teach preventive measures against cancer to people of all ages, especially to the youth; to support and to help all cancer patients (in particular, breast cancer patients) including those of a minority group, the destitute and the unemployed as well as their relatives. Women who live in rural and remote areas do not easily have access to a doctor. Trainings for women aged 25-60 years on breast self-examination will be held in small and large villages in Argolida and Corinthia. Screening tests will also be provided to a thousand of women. This is especially needed in rural areas, such as Argolida, where there is a serious problem of patients falling victims to social exclusion.

Summary of project results

The project that we implemented included two actions: “Women Education in self-examination – Ultrasound of the breast” and “Prevention of colon cancer”. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. In Greece 4500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and it is estimated that 1 in 12 women will get breast cancer sometime in her life. In Europe, 60% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage, while in Greece they are much lower. The project supported the vulnerable population in Argolida and Nemea province and more specifically, women who had difficulty or who were completely unable to learn about breast cancer, due to low educational and economic level and a low degree of socialization. Under the "Women Education program on self - ultrasound breast exam", we visited 39 regions in Argolida and Nemea municipality mostly because they are located in remote and rural areas. We offered documented information relating to cancer issues, we examined sonographically 1000 women and 1190 were trained in palpation. Moreover, colorectal cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the inner surface of the colon. It is the third in cancer incidence for men and women. In order to prevent colon cancer it is advised to do a hemoglobin detection test in the stools. Through additional action "Prevention of colorectal cancer," we visited six rural areas in Argolida and the Municipality of Nemea, where we informed 360 people on the causes, symptoms and the specific cancer prevention methods, who in turn conducted preventive examination mayer contracted in the microbiological laboratories program in local areas.
