The ultimate aim of this project is the facilitation of immigrants’ social inclusion via an improvement of immigrant preschool children’ growing up conditions. Training seminars will be conducted for both parents and nursery staff. In addition, a small- scale renovation will take place in order to safeguard the children’s health and safety conditions, and also reduce operation costs of the kindergarten.

Summary of project results

Immigrants have always constituted a particularly vulnerable group of the general population, which their status has become even worst over the last years of crisis in Greece. The economic crisis is often the reason for the adoption of racist attitudes and the spread of xenophobic feelings vis-a-vis immigrants. Proper preparation and education of migrant children in preschool stages, is especially important for the smooth integration in the Greek educational system and their integration into society. With this project the Day Care facilities were improved and the quality of the services provided to migrant children from 14 different immigrant communities of Athens, registered in the school years 2014-15 and 2015-16 (number much higher than previous years), were upgraded. On the one hand, in the framework of the building upgrade, the installation of firefighting devices for the Center have strengthen Munting Nayon safety. Minor repairs have been made also in the building. Last but not least the heating system was replaced by a natural gas system of heating with multiple benefits (financial, environmental) for the building and its users. On the other hand, the conduction of the training part of the project managed to bring closer the staff and parents of the Day Care center with useful information and new practices around the upbringing of children of preschool ages. More specifically, a series of training courses were conducted tackling four major topics (environment, health, upbringing children-psychological support, child growth and development), which have strengthened the skills and confidence of parents. Moreover, the project’s educational activities enabled parents and Munting Nayon staff to get closer, which was of great importance in the care of the children.
