Description

The DEIMOS project plans to utilize remote sensing to demonstrate how a systematic monthly coverage could be performed in tropical areas, and thereby obtain crucial information about the environmental impact caused by deforestation and its temporal evolution. DEIMOS Imaging will make a systematic design and prototyping of data acquisitions, which will enable us to define a methodology that optimizes the catches over the region to be covered and allows generating coverage of any country in the world, in this case with a monthly frequency.

Summary of project results

The DEIMOS project has demonstrated, through the use of remote sensing, how a systematic monthly coverage can be performed in tropical areas, obtaining crucial information about the environmental impact caused by deforestation and its temporal evolution. Remote sensing data from DEIMOS-1 satellite has resulted in a key source of information for the implemented operational system. As a result of the prototyping, images have been acquired from Paraguay and Thailand on a monthly basis, providing the raw information needed to generate corrected coverage by filtering clouds, restoring data and eliminating temporary inconsistencies. The obtaining of these systematic coverages has allowed carrying out the estimation of the amount of biomass and fraction of vegetative cover, as well as the carbon models. The collection of systematic coverage of tropical areas with high-frequency and high-resolution satellite data has supported the achievement of the objectives of the project: to establish a reliable system for monitoring, analysis and verification of information able to quantify the CO2 increase due to deforestation, to contribute to the establishment of a flexible international program to fight against deforestation and climate change, and to define a common monitoring procedure for any region considered in the Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative.

Summary of bilateral results

Partnership between KSAT and DEIMOS Imaging has proven to provide successful results: the objectives of this DEIMES project have been successfully completed because of the DEIMOS-1 data availability, which could be collected due to the effectiveness and reliability of KSAT services to DEIMOS. Kongsberg Satellite Services AS (KSAT) was uniquely positioned to provide ground station and earth observation services for polar orbiting satellites.
