Description
Although the children of Hiiu county are generally well engaged in youth activities, not all of them participate. The ones that do not participate tend to become clients of the juvenile committee and to maintain this negative status in the long term. There is thus a need for new working methods to deal with children and youth at risk in the county. The aim of the project is to increase youth specialists' competence and knowledge of crime prevention and to decrease the social exclusion of youth at risk. To achieve these goals, the project will establish Hiiu county specialists' cooperation network, consisting of youth workers and child protection officers, amongst others, and provide different kind of activities for children through networking. This will include practical activities, training, therapy, and counseling. Through these activities, recurring crime and negative behavior among young people are expected to be reduced. The main target group of the project is youth at risk and people working with them.
Summary of project results
Theproject was necessary to raise competence of specialists working with children and to give an opportunity for children and youth at risk to deal with their problems and give police alternatiive tool to work with children. Routine and steady work is necessary to achieve the results. During the Project a programm was created to where delinquent children were sent through police, teachers and parents. 23 children participated in the programm. During the Project case-based Network continued to help children. Also specialists working with children were trained. 61 participated. Secondary tärget group was children and youth at risk. 23 participated. To raise awareness in the island of Hiiumaa, a blog was created and articles were written to local paper.
