Description

The project aims to increase awareness of the gender pay gap among the Czech public, to initiate a society-wide discussion of the gender pay gap GPG and to search for mechanisms to prevent it. In the project, the Gender Information Centre NORA (NGO) will cooperate with the Public Defender of Rights Office. A campaign aimed at the broader public will be run all over the country. Eight videos will be shot with selected respectable public figures. The videos will be shown on public TV, DVTV, YouTube, in cinemas, on social media and at film festivals. In all regional capitals, debates with citizens on GPG will be carried out. Apart from public debates, project days on GPG will be held at secondary schools with students. Another activity carried out in regional capitals has the form of roundtables with social partners. The roundtables will focus on the search for concrete solutions to GPG. Based on outputs of a data analysis using available datasets and on feedback from the social partners, a position paper will be elaborated. An international conference for experts will be held at the Public Defender of Rights Office. As a result, a collection of conference contributions will be published.

Summary of project results

The different earnings of women and men are a significant indicator of gender inequality in the labour market. The size of the gender pay gap in the Czech Republic has long put it in the worst-rated positions in the European Union. So far, however, this has not drawn the attention and interest of the Czech public. We have decided to raise domestic awareness of this issue, stimulate public discussion, and look for ways to prevent the gender pay gap in our country. In January 2016, we organised an international conference in Brno, attended by 87 people and which generated the publication of Czech-English conference proceedings. We have prepared a position document on the topic of the gender pay gap that summarises our data analyses and outputs of round tables with social partners. In total, over the course of the 14 month project, our awareness- raising activities were attended by 261 people from the general public, 354 secondary school students, and 128 representatives of these social partners. In June 2016 a press conference on the gender pay gap took place in Prague, attracting significant media interest. We intend to continue work on this issue.
