Description

Media and wide public have not so far paid sufficient attention to the planned reform of psychiatric care in Czech Republic. It is therefore necessary to raise public awareness about the reform in particular and about the basic problems of people with serious mental illness in general. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improved knowledge about the situation and needs of people with severe mental illness and the forthcoming reform of psychiatric care. The project is focused on mapping of problems, needs and expectations of psychiatric patients and their family members, and keeping the public informed about the preparations and realisation of the psychiatric reform. The main target group consist of mentally ill patients and their families who have to deal with the current insufficient psychiatric care system and stigmatization in society.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to map the needs of people with mental illness and to collect information useful for the reform of psychiatric care in the Czech Republic. A questionnaire survey was conducted on the needs of people with severe mental illnesses, interviews with mentally ill people, their family members and professionals from helping professions were carried out. The results of the questionnaire survey were processed and published (130 respondents from 1,000 respondents answered). Poll interviews were processed and published. Based on these materials, a final analysis was prepared. The results of the entire project were summarized in a publication published on www.lidemezilidmi.cz. Informing the public about the needs of people with mental illness continues on this web portal. The creation of the questionnaire, its distribution and processing was the task of people with serious mental illness involved in the project. Interviews were also conducted by people with mental illness. They also largely contributed to the final analysis and publication.
