Description

The project addresses the need to reintegrate children with antisocial behavior placed in correctional boarding schools (CBS) to prevent them from relapsing into crime. The project aims at reintegrating them via extracurricular activities and a tracing mechanism. First, 16 representatives of CBS and NGOs will set up a tracing mechanism to follow young people coming of age who leave the institutions. Second, a 20-day extracurricular programme will be offered to 68 students in Angel Uzunov CBS, Rakitovo Municipality, to develop their social skills and attitude to the world. Fourth, the students will be allowed to take part in local and school events (marathons, theatre plays, Christmas markets). Finally, 10 students will be identified to compete for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (bronze star). The project will benefit children in CBS, CBS staff, the authorities and the public. The partner will provide its premises, voluntary work and expertise.

Summary of project results

The project aimed at introducing an extracurricular programme for students from correctional facilities to help them acquire the knowledge and skills for reintegration in the society and development of a mechanism to help them after they leave the correctional facilities. The programme developed under the project helped set up an efficient model of reintegration of “problem” students. The support mechanism is used to improve educational models. The main project outputs were the system developed and tested for efficient and evolving extracurricular education for students from correctional institutions and a mechanism to support them after they leave the institution. The activities included many creative and professional courses giving the students the opportunity for own initiative and public participation. The following activities took place: 19 professional courses, 22 creative courses, 4 local initiatives, 7 own events for the local community, the media and institutions. The activities helped systematically provide educational services in the correctional institutions. The Programme and the courses focused on vocational skills and crafts gave the students the opportunity for social communication and boosted their capacity for development after they leave the institution. The programme was developed in such a way so as to be easy for application in other institutions as well. The students, teachers and educators from Angel Uzunov Correctional Facility and the community of the town of Rakitovo took part in the project. The project helped Re-Act Association boost its capacity for provision of educational services to juveniles with deviant behaviour, the services adapted to the needs of the target group. The project was implemented in partnership with Angel Uzunov Correctional Facility and Future Now 2006 Community Centre.
