Description

The project addresses the challenges children with special needs and their parents experience related to the lack of services to develop their life skills. The project aims at building the capacity of the applicant to provide services to develop the life skills of such children and teach their parents to support them when they grow-up and in puberty, in particular. The project also aims at setting up sustainable partnership between parents and institutions. First, meetings will be held to identify the needs. Second, Life Skills Programme will be developed. Third, 20 people with special needs aged 12-38 and 27 parents will be trained to acquire life skills. Fourth, counseling with a sexologist and training on the challenges of puberty will be held. Finally, 5 reporters will be trained to raise their awareness. The project will benefit the children and parents involved by improving their life skills and helping them cope with the challenges.

Summary of project results

The project was needed in order to improve the capacity of Victoria – 04 Association and addressed the challenges children with special needs and their parents experience related to the lack of services to develop their life skills. Thanks to the project a good team was formed that will work together in the future. Explored were the needs of parents of persons with special needs and disabled persons themselves for developing their skills to cope with everyday situations. 27 parents of individuals with special needs are now able to deal with everyday situations. 20 persons with special needs, aged 12 to 38, improved their life skills, prepared to deal with everyday situations. 27 parents of persons with disabilities support the development of their children’s abilities to deal with life situations. The families are now prepared to deal with challenges during puberty of their children. The project managed to change the attitudes in positive direction of the journalists from Veliko Tarnovo who report on problems of people with disabilities. During the project implementation sustainable partnerships between institutions and parents of persons with disabilities were established. The organisation itself was promoted as one supporting families of people with special needs, offering educational and social services for individuals and their parents. The Programme "Life Skills of Persons with Special Needs and Their Parents” was implemented as part of the project, including life-skills training.
