Description

The project addresses the need to overcome negative parenting behaviour (verbal and physical abuse, lack of parental care) and related stereotypes (corporal punishment). The project aims at raising the awareness of about 200 parents and other stakeholders about modern parenting, child care, communication and upbringing via a series of events. First, parents will be selected to take part in a 2-day workshop. Second, a series of lectures and workshops will be held on prenatal development and new-born care, early childhood development, upbringing, empathy, positive parenting and international child protection. Finally, the parents’ attitudes will be assessed on entry and exit via questionnaires. The project will benefit Bulgarian parents, the media, NGOs and representatives of the institutions. The partners will contribute with their experience and good practices and will disseminate the project activities and results across their networks to reach more than 1000 other parents.

Summary of project results

In the course of the last 10 years the cases of negative models of parenting have increased in Bulgaria. This goes mainly for verbal abuse, shouting and insults as well as lack of parental care. The project aimed at raising the awareness of 200 parents, the media, NGOs and representatives of the institutions about contemporary methods of child care, communication and upbringing in compliance with the child’s fundamental rights during pregnancy, childhood and adolescence and provision of a healthy family environment. A two-day workshop was held with 351 participants who addressed the issue of positive parenting showing respect for the child’s rights and ensuring the best conditions for children’s development without downplaying the needs of the parents via a holistic approach addressing all stages of the child’s development from the womb to the adolescence. The lectures during the workshop were video recorded and disseminated among the participants, in the media and social networks. The Facebook webpage of the association increased the number of its followers to 521 people. A representative survey was held among 910 respondents. More than 30 media partnerships were made and the message of the workshop reached indirectly more than 100 000 people who had the opportunity to get a fresh perspective on the issue.
