Description

The project addresses the issue of social integration of children at risk (of anti-social behavior, school dropping out, committing crimes). The project aims to teach at-risk children intercultural communication and tolerance and involve them in social and cultural activities. First, the teaching methodology and materials will be developed. Second, a public awareness- raising campaign will be carried out. Third, 2 competitions will be organized on children’s rights and cultural and historical heritage. Next, a carnival presenting different ethnic groups will be held. Finally, children will have classes on intercultural communication, ethnic diversity at the community centre. The project will benefit disadvantaged children in the village of Cherven including Roma children and the local community in general. The project partner will support the project activities with its expertise and funding.

Summary of project results

The project enabled the target groups (children at risk from marginalized communities) to learn about the cultural values of the Roma, Turks and the people in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, their Christmas traditions, rituals and folk art. The children learned the benefits of cooperation and mutual help and were introduced to various festive traditions via dancing, art and seminars. The children had the opportunity to join social and cultural events keeping their ethnic and cultural identity and expanding their knowledge. In addition, Hristo Botev Primary School expanded its opportunities for work with disadvantaged children and their parents.
