Description

The project addresses the challenges faced by the Roma community in the town of Lom. The project aims at training young Roma leaders to mobilize the Roma community and involve the Roma in the social and political life of the town. First, support services and counseling will be provided to 800 Roma in Lom. Second, 60 young leaders aged 20-35 will be selected and their training needs will be analyzed. Third, 4 3-day training workshops will be carried out to train the young Roma leaders. Fourth, specific issues will be identified in the Roma neighbourhoods and awareness campaigns will be carried out. Next, the Roma leaders will present recommendations and proposals to the local authorities to develop the relevant policies. The project will benefit about 800 Roma in the town of Lom, young Roma leaders, the local authorities and the public in general by boosting the capacity in the Roma community to tackle its difficulties.

Summary of project results

As a result of the project 60 people from the four Roma neighbourhoods of the town of Lom acquired skills to identify major issues for their community, formulate and present them to the relevant institutions as well as propose solutions for them. The trained group carried out 4 campaigns addressing various issues of the Roma community in Lom. The campaigns were planned following situation analyses in the Roma neighbourhood prepared with an advocacy expert. In addition, the community workers consulted more than 1000 Roma on issues related to their daily communication with institutions and service providers.
