Description

The project addresses the challenged access to education of children with disabilities in Vidin Municipality. The project aims at empowering the children’s parents to exercise control on the implementation of the local inclusive education policies. First, 100 parents of children with disabilities will learn about the challenges and opportunities of inclusive education in a series of meetings. Second, the implementation of the Education System Development Strategy of Vidin Municipality for the period 2008-2015 will be analyzed to identify needed amendments. Third, a civil monitoring methodology will be developed to enable all stakeholders to exercise pressure on local authorities. Finally, an advocacy campaign will be held with a series of meetings and public discussions to promote the analysis made. The project will benefit children with disabilities and their families in Vidin Municipality, the local authorities and the local community in general.

Summary of project results

As a result of the project a Civic Council was set up in the town of Vidin. Its first task will be to monitor the implementation of the Strategy for the development of education in Vidin Municipality. The Council members included active local opinion leaders and supporters of better-quality education in the area. Their previous efforts in this area guarantee that the Council will work. The other important project outcome is that the Strategy for the development of education in Vidin Municipality (2008 - 2015) has been well promoted among the children with disabilities and their parents as well as municipal and school authorities.
