Description

The project addresses the need to promote greater tolerance and intercultural dialogue and fight racism, hate speech and xenophobia. The project aims at promoting greater tolerance via an anti-discrimination radio programme of 36 episodes broadcast on Darik radio station. First, 36 episodes of Give Me the Right programme, each 50 minutes long, will be aired on Darik Radio and published on www.dariknews.bg and on the partner’s website (www.bghelsinki.org) and Facebook account. The programme will focus on fighting discrimination and hate speech against the Roma, Moslems and other minorities. Second, 4-month-long internships will be organized for 3 members of the Roma community and 2 members of vulnerable groups to train them as reporters. The project will benefit the people from vulnerable groups, the Roma, ethnic minorities, refugees and the local community in general. The partner will contribute with its experience in human rights protection and contacts with the target groups.

Summary of project results

The project “Give Me the Right!” was developed to meet the growing wave of discrimination of vulnerable groups in Bulgaria. The project aimed at giving them voice to face the widespread nationalistic and xenophobic manifestations. The 36 one-hour programmes aired by Darik Radio informed the broad public about the status of human rights in Bulgaria and raised the public awareness about the unconditional need to respect human rights. The content of the programmes was compiled to meet the urgent issues related to human rights. The subjects were selected after consultations between the partners and the actual urgent issues related to human rights were considered. One of the main project outcomes is greater awareness of the audience of Darik Radio and Darik News about the issues related to human rights. The radio show regularly explained about the unfulfilled state commitments to the vulnerable groups and informed the audience about the necessary steps and policies by the institutions to protect the impaired rights of asylum seekers, Roma, children in institutions, mentally disabled, homosexuals, etc. The radio show most of all aimed at contributing to the shaping of a tolerant attitude towards differences. Yet another sustainable result was the fact that five trainees had the opportunity to be introduced to journalism as a profession and worked as part-time reporters in Darik Radio. Their traineeship contributed to their personal development.
